Senior Will Bratcher (5) dribbles the ball around a Starfire defender

The Eastbrook Panthers boys soccer team honored 4 seniors on Thursday night, then proceeded to shutout the South Adams Starfires for the second year in a row, 3-0. Honored in a ceremony before the game were seniors Will Bratcher (midfield/defense, #5), Brett Holder (midfield, #16), Cameron Wilson (midfield/defense, #17), and Daniel Brainer (goalie, #0). They were presented with soccer balls signed by the team and gift bags. Each senior’s mother received a flower.

Following the ceremony, the Panthers staged a relentless attack against the Starfire defense, constantly breaking it down for shots on goal. The first half ended, however, still tied at 0 as junior Adam Siegelin had two shots hit of the posts and freshman Zane Shilts missed a shot at close range. The team, however, possessed the ball a majority of the time and the Starfires never really mounted any offensive attack.

The second half was a different story. Even though the Panthers had to work against a blistering cold wind, they finally broke through with 3 goals in the half. Junior Adam Siegelin found the back of the net off an offensive attack that featured great ball movement and passing. His goal was assisted by freshman Zane Shilts.

Junior Logan Gunning turned another great passing display by the Panthers into a goal later in the half, assisted by junior Cole Kennedy.

Adam Siegelin added another goal that was actually stopped by the Starfire goalie, but slipped through his arms and rolled into the goal. It was a little poetic justice for the two shots Siegelin took in the first half that hit the crossbar and left post. Senior Will Bratcher got the assist.

Senior goalie Daniel Brainer was not challenged much in the first half, but did end up making 7 saves on the night to preserve the shutout. But he wasn’t the only one who made a save. With a few minutes left in the contest, Brainer was out of position on a Starfire attack and junior defender Jake Parker stopped a Starfire shot from going into the goal with his body, preserving the 3-0 score.

The 3-0 win ends the Panthers’ season with a record of 8-3-2. They also end the season on a 3-game win streak, having beaten Whitko (3-0) and Mississinewa (2-0) in the two games prior to this one. The three shutouts gives them a total of 6 shutouts on the season.

The Panthers begin sectional play at home next Wednesday, October 7 at 7:30pm against Blackford. Come out and support your Panthers!
