The Panther track teams used their best night of the year to run an outstanding meet last evening. The boys’ team defeated Southwood and Northfield to stay undefeated on the season. The girls put a great effort – in spite of missing three of their highest point scorers – to take second to Southwood.
The girls’ team saw many season and personal best marks on the night. Savannah Leas led the charge early with first place finishes in the shot and disc. Her distances were career bests in both events. The discus was almost a 10 foot improvement.
Ashley Brown and Courtney Haynes followed that with a 1-2 finish in the high jump. Brown won with a jump of 5’2. She just missed tying her personal best of 5’4. Haynes’ second place finish had a personal best jump of 4’8, a 2 inch improvement.
Second place finishes came from Sierra Colvin in the 800 and Hannah Seward in the 3200. The girls’ record stands at 2-1.
The boys’ team had an exceptional meet as well. They won by a score of 76-46-31. Leading the way for the Panthers once again was Jacob Singer in the 100, 200 and 4 x 100 relay. Brett Holder also had two wins in the 1600 and 3200. Zach Burton was the other double winner in the 110 hurdles and the 4 x 100 relay. Eric Mason had a win in the shot put.
Ashton Needler, Keaton Cooper, Peyton Watson, Derrick Shelton, Mason, and Burton also had 2nd place finishes for the Panthers.
The boys’ record stands at 3-0. The next meet will be on Thursday at Elwood with Oak Hill and Elwood.
The teams had more than a dozen athletes with season and personal best performances last night. This was a great way to start the season!
